Brick Therapy: The 5 Stages of Non-LEGO Brick Collecting

Do you collect LEGO alternatives? From Stage 1 curiosity to Stage 5 acceptance, we break down the journey of the typical alt-brick collector. Where are you?

  1. Stage 1: Curiosity. You spot a set and think, alright… that actually looks pretty decent.
  2. Stage 2: Denial. I’ll just buy 1 small taster set to try it out. I’m not mixing it with LEGO though. No chance.
  3. Stage 3: Bargaining. Buys a bigger set like a modular. It’s fine. I’ll keep it on separate shelves.
  4. Stage 4: Guilt. These are actually really good. Same quality, less money. But… my beloved LEGO…
  5. Stage 5: Acceptance. Screw it. They are all bricks, now where should I put the record shop in my LEGO city?

The Stage 6 Reality Check

Fast forward 100 posts on the The Right Brick and my shelves are a testament to Stage 5. What really tipped the scales for me was seeing the sheer variety of high-quality designs coming from brands like Lumibricks. Their mastery of integrated lighting, paired with the precision of GoBricks parts, made me realise that the “off-brand” stigma is officially dead.

It isn’t just about the lighting though. I have been blown away by the creative licences and retro vibes from Pantasy, as well as the unique and often quirkier designs from the likes of iambrick and many more. Whether it is the 100% printed parts (goodbye, sticker sheets!) or the insane value for money, the gap has closed. My LEGO city is now a “mixed neighbourhood,” and honestly? It has never looked better.
